Abstract
The present study analyzes the important function that the music performed in the construction of the new kingdom of Chile (specially its capital, Santiago), by contributing to reaching the status that the religious and civic authorities prescribed for a colonial city, and facilitating the transmission of the Catholic doctrine among Chilean people. On the basis of the information from historical documents and bibliography, this article examines several aspects such as the teaching and financing of music in religious institutions, as well as the way in which indigenous musicians integrated with the system that the conquerors imposed.
